Every two years voters get to choose a neighbor to serve as their elected representative to the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC). ANCs provide advisory feedback to District agencies, the Council and the Mayor on a range of issues affecting the community and the District as a whole. It is a volunteer elected position.
Cleveland Park Smart Growth reached out to candidates in ANC 3A, 3C, and 3F and asked them to respond to a brief candidate questionnaire. Below are the candidates who responded.
If you are not sure what ANC district you live in, you can look it up here.
ANC 3A
In 3A03, CPSG endorses Isaac Bowers. 3A03, an open seat, is the only contested race in ANC 3A. Like the previous commissioner for this seat, Hans Miller, Bowers supports building out more multimodal transportation infrastructure. He supports a return to Concept C for Connecticut Avenue protected bike lanes but also other area roadways, including Wisconsin Avenue. Both Bowers and his opponent, Maria Perisic, express support for allowing house-scale apartments in residential areas exclusively zoned today for single-family homes. We hope this is a common sense issue that can find support across the areas ANCs. Bowers has been an active member of CPSG and frequently lends his voice to issues before District policy makers. 3A03 covers the westernmost portion of Cleveland Park, Hearst Park, Pool, and School, Sidwell, Cathedral Commons and the east side of Wisconsin Ave north to Van Ness Street.
3A03 – Isaac Bowers Endorsed by CPSG
ANC 3C
3C01 – Samuel Littauer Endorsed by CPSG – An open-seat with no named candidate on the ballot, Samuel Littauer has stepped up with energy and enthusiasm to run as a write-in. It’s spelled L-I-T-T-A-U-E-R. His responses to our questions show a commitment to better urbanism, better land use, and multi-modal transportation. We also appreciate his love for Woodley Park and desire to promote its “historic vibrancy.” Write-in campaign are hard, and it will take flyers and yard signs to get his name out there. Consider chipping it to help Samuel in his campaign ($25 max contribution limit per individual).
3C02 – Adam Prinzo Endorsed by CPSG – Incumbent Prinzo’s responses to our questionnaire show a commitment to public and pedestrian safety, sound land use, and support for vibrant retail. Prinzo’s first term is marked by his leadership as Secretary, Chair of the Transparency and Public Processes Committee, and Co-Chair of the Public Safety Committee. He helped transform ANC 3C into a rules-based, transparent organization that maintains open lines of communication with the community. He has been a successful liaison between the community and the construction at the Wardman site. He also deserve accolades for fighting to bring a grocery store to Woodley Park, something that is finally happening at the former ACE Hardware site.
3C06 – Jay Bose Endorsed by CPSG – Jay Bose is a director of CPSG (and did not participate in the endorsement process!) and an enthusiastic fan of Cleveland Park. His responses to our questionnaire show his dedication to making Cleveland Park more welcoming to new neighbors and his commitment to making our roads safer for all users. We especially appreciate his comments that protected bike lanes on Connecticut Avenue benefit everyone. Jay’s district encompasses much of the commercial area in Cleveland Park and he supports the recommended zoning changes for the area. He tells us he’s running, “’so we can keep up the momentum and make Cleveland Park a more sustainable, vibrant, and affordable place to live.”
3C07 – Gawain Kripke Endorsed by CPSG – Incumbent Gawain Kripke almost wishes he had an opponent because he loves getting out and talking to neighbors about the issues in the neighborhood. He will be doing that anyway even though he running opposed. Kripke’s responses to our questionnaire echo how he has served and voted as a commissioner in his first term: committed to expanding inclusivity and being purposeful at getting rid of the area’s history of exclusivity so more people can enjoy living in our high opportunity community. He has been a big supporter of protected bike lanes stressing both safety and equity. His leadership of the Grants committee on ANC 3C demonstrated a commitment to spending 3C resources to improve, educate, and provide aid to the area, even when it seemed the Office ANC was working just as hard against these goals. Woodley Park is lucky to have Kripke for another term!
ANC 3F
3F01- Sammy David Thumba (write-in)
3F01 – Amy Rofman (write-in)
